An Elective placement in a rural India!

The Elective at ASHWINI is ideal for anyone wishing to experience an integrated health program in a resource poor setting in rural India.

Students learn not only about using clinical judgement in the treatment of a patient at a secondary hospital, but also about how preventive health, education, community development, land rights issues etc. influence the health of a community.

The program in a nutshell

The program in a nutshell.

Elective students spend about 3 days a week in the 36 bed Gudalur Adivasi hospital. Here they take part in daily ward rounds, outpatient clinics, Labour and Operating rooms and doing case work up and presentations.

During the other days, the schedule will include visits to the clinic in one of the eight area centres, the villages on the Mobile clinic or with health workers, the tea plantation or the school.

Comprehensive Health Care

A participatory health care model

ASHWINI's health care system is comprehensive, with preventive and promotive care in over 300 hamlets with the aid of village health workers, eight area centres managed by trained tribals(Health animators) to secondary level care in the hospital.

You will have an opportunity to personally learn the whole gamut of services provided and to interact with staff and patients.

The Gudalur Valley is one of the most beautiful places in the Nilgiris District. These Hills and the forests have been home to over 30000 Adivasis of this area for centuries.

During your elective, you will be on duty from Monday - Friday inclusive. Weekends are free.

You can have a go at Indian dresses and do shopping in Gudalur market!

Week ends are free and there are many wonderful places to visit in and around Gudalur. Our team will assist you in all such travel plans.

You will have an excellent opportunity to observe procedues done - including complicated deliveries and caeserian sections - and discuss things with the doctors
